Have Enough Full Length Hanging Space
Our first design tip to help you create your dream walk-in wardrobe is to make sure you have enough full length hanging space. Most people prioritise hanging space for shorter items, but you want to make sure that your full length coats and longer going out dresses have ample space to hang and remain in the best condition possible. Not only will it look great in your wardrobe having this space reserved for longer items, but it also helps it to look nice and neat without anything being scrunched up. If you don’t have loads of longer items and not many of the same type of clothing, it could look a bit messy, so in this case you could have this section with doors to close off if it doesn’t look great.
Showcase Your Accessories
We’d always recommend that you showcase your accessories in your walk-in wardrobe, as it can bring a great design feature to the space. You can have some glass storage, whether it’s glass shelving or storage boxes, to showcase your favourite shoes, bags, belts and more. Not only does this allow you to see everything that you have in your wardrobe, but it will look stunning too. You could colour coordinate your items, or organise by brand if you have quite a lot of designer pieces. Lots of closed cupboards in a walk-in wardrobe can look quite dull, so having some open shelving or cupboards with glass fronts and glass shelving can provide some variation that you need to really add some character to the room.
Don’t Underestimate Lighting
Something that can transform your walk-in wardrobe is lighting! Having some mood lighting around your walk-in wardrobe will just make it feel really luxurious. You will have main lighting, then you could back light the shelves in your wardrobes with soft LED lighting. You can definitely do this on a budget, with simple LED strip lights, or you can have everything designed and fitted as part of the main build. You should also have a nice bright dressing table mirror light, so you can get ready no matter the time of the day. It will really brighten the whole room and bring a lovely atmosphere.
Use Vertical Space
Another thing that people often overlook when it comes to their walk-in wardrobe is vertical space. It can quite considerably improve the storage capacity, as for things that don’t need as much space, you can have a much thinner area that you can still fit everything in, without the wasted space! Something like this is great for shoe or accessory storage. You can also utilise smaller or awkward spaced areas, like corner areas, to make use of every section of the room!
Consider A Three-Paneled Mirror
One feature we absolutely love in a walk in wardrobe is a three panelled mirror. Being able to see your outfit from all angles is a big bonus and you have the benefit of light bouncing around the room to make everything nice and bright! Not every walk-in wardrobe has space for a full length three panelled mirror, but you could have one full length mirror, then two on the interiors of doors, so you can still create the same effect without utilising valuable space in your wardrobe.
Add Floating Shelves
A good way to cut down some costs whilst still getting extra storage is to add floating shelves. Rather than having fitted wardrobes all around the room, having some floating shelves helps to open up the space and save money too. This is especially the case if it’s quite a small space, as the fitted wardrobe on every wall will take up quite a lot of space. On the floating shelves, you could store things like skincare, jewellery or perfume/aftershave, or you could have some stylish storage boxes on there too. Your options are endless as you can have them close together to store smaller items, or quite far apart for bigger storage options, but this is a great way to keep the space feeling open whilst still ensuring you have enough storage for everything you need.
