7 Ways To Maximise Storage In a Small Garage Space

Many of us are lucky enough to have the benefit of garage space. It acts as a haven for all of our goods that may not be needed in everyday life but comes as an essential at other times. With this need for storage, comes the inevitable untidiness and disorganisation of these items.

From muddy shoes being left in piles, to DIY equipment being left in an unsolvable puzzle in a forgotten box, there is a need for structure in the garage space. If you are someone who has a smaller garage space, this might seem even more impossible to try and make this space worthwhile. The truth is, it is possible, and there are so many ways to utilise the space and make it somewhere that you do not avoid entering.

In this blog post, we will share our tips and tricks on making the most out of your garage space, even with minimal room for creativity. Take a look at our following suggestions:

Clear the area

First thing first, you need to make the floor of your garage visible. This means opening up all the doors, weaving through the boxes of rubbish, and finding a new home for the essentials you will be keeping. This would be a good time to have a few bin bags, temporary cardboard boxes, and of course some cleaning equipment for a breath of fresh air. You will likely come into contact with some spiders, but it will all be worth it when you have an open space to deal with.

Use vertical shelf space

If you do not yet have some form of vertical shelf space, you are missing out on a great opportunity to organise and clear up the spider webs being collected in your items on the floor. Get some wide-spaced shelves so you can fit the biggest and heaviest of boxes on the surface. This is not one to go cheap on, because if you opt for the inexpensive option, you can expect everything to come tumbling down.

Storage bins

Now that you have the shelving in place, you need to gather storage bins to fill up the space. These storage bins can be as robust or as fancy as you would like them to be. For safe storage, we could suggest plastic, sealable bins that will not pop open should your shelving suddenly fall. It would also be a good idea to label each storage bin. Create your own personalised labels, or simply write the contents of the box using a Sharpie pen. This will avoid the need to pull all of your boxes out when you are looking for that one piece of equipment needed for your gardening.

Create a messy zone

Speaking of gardening, you should create a space for DIY, tools, and potting your flowers. This space should consist of a sturdy wooden desk, a peg board for smaller items, and cleaning equipment that will allow you to quickly clear the area once you have finished doing your handy work. This space will be well utilised and you will be grateful to have an area that is dedicated to mess, instead of letting the chaos extend into the rest of the room. Hang items such as small tools and gardening equipment on the peg shelf so they are ready and raring to go.

Hang your larger items up with hooks

Hooks are not just for the smaller garage items. Elevate the mess on the floor and consider using large hooks for items such as bikes, lawnmowers, and other large equipment. Opt for a strong and resistant hook and carefully mount it onto your wall space to lift the bikes out of the way.

Make space for vehicles

Now you have the larger items up and away, you should have space for your vehicles. With many people today now opting for electric vehicles, having the charger inside the garage space will prove to be extremely helpful and secure. Even if your garage space is too small for your four-wheel vehicles, it may be a great place to carefully store your big wheeled scooters, and provide the area with a dry space to charge.

Keep a dedicated shoe shelf

Last but certainly not least, it is time to give those muddy hiking shoes a proper home. Even if your shoes are unsightly, you can give them the care they need and have a dedicated shoe shelf for your garden, hiking, and other lesser-used pairs of shoes. Prevent the spiders and insects from making a home in your shoes, and keep them off the ground with a shoe rack a few stories high.

Bottom line

It is possible to have a great-looking garage space, even with minimal room. Start by getting rid of the mess and unwanted items, build a reliable shelving stack, invest in storage boxes and label them correctly, and of course, have a dedicated work and charging station for your DIY goods.
